What do the trap colours mean?

Each dog runs from a numbered trap and wears a jacket in a fixed colour. Once you know the six, you can follow a race on a phone screen without reading a single name.

Trap bias is real and track specific. Some circuits favour the rails so heavily that traps 1 and 2 win a disproportionate share of races. Regulars keep a note per track rather than trusting a general rule.

Which markets are worth your time?

Three, realistically.

• Win — one dog, first past the post. Prices sit between about 2.50 and 12.00 in a typical six-dog field.
• Forecast — two dogs in exact order. The returns look wonderful and the strike rate will remind you why.
• Tricast — three in order. Fun for one small stake a night, ruinous as a habit.

There is no handicapping subtlety to hide behind here. Six dogs, thirty seconds, one break from the traps that decides most of it.

Why does a dog drift right before the off?

Late money is informed money. Kennel news, a dog that looks stiff in the parade, a scratching elsewhere on the card — all of it lands in the last two minutes, and the price reacts before any commentary explains it. A steady drift from 3.40 out to 5.00 is the market telling you something it has not put into words.

That does not mean follow the drift blindly. It means do not be surprised by it, and do not take the early price simply because it looked bigger an hour ago.

The honest problem with a race every four minutes

Cricket gives you hours between decisions. Greyhounds give you minutes, and there is always another card open. A hundred rupees a race sounds trivial until you count fifteen races and realise the evening cost fifteen hundred.

Two habits fix most of it. Decide how many races you are betting before you open the tab — six is plenty — and put the stake on the races you chose rather than the ones that happen to be off next. If that sounds restrictive, it is, and that is the point.

What an evening on the dogs actually looks like

1. Around 10pm ISTThe UK evening cards get going. Markets are thin at first because the local crowd is only just arriving.
2. 11pm to 1amPeak. Several meetings overlap, a race goes off every few minutes, and prices are at their most reliable.
3. 1am to 3amCards thin out. Fewer meetings, wider spreads, and a much better argument for stopping than continuing.
4. MorningAustralian and occasional South African tracks fill the gap for anyone awake at the wrong hour.

That middle block is the only stretch worth planning around. Betting the 2am races because they are the ones still running is how a controlled evening turns into a bad one.

The arithmetic nobody does before starting

Six dogs, one winner. Back the favourite every race at around 2.60 and you need to win roughly two out of five just to stand still. Back a 7.00 shot every race and you need one in seven. Neither is a strategy on its own; both are worth understanding before you decide a hundred rupees a race is harmless.

Run the number properly. Twelve races at ₹200 is ₹2,400 through the market in under an hour. Whether that is fine or not is your call entirely — but make it as a decision, not as an accident discovered at the end of the night.

Watching the races

Track streams run inside the panel for most UK meetings once you are logged in with a funded balance. Picture quality drops on weak mobile data, and the feed sits a few seconds behind the result the market already knows — irrelevant here, because betting closes at the traps anyway.

What the stream is genuinely useful for is the parade. A dog that looks flat walking to the traps often runs that way, and after a couple of weeks you start noticing it before the price does.
